Top 10 Ways to Provoke a Geek Argument

Writing by white on Thursday, 18 of June , 2009 at 3:39 pm

This article seems to be a hot topic among the people geeks in my facebook account.

Geeks, as a general rule, are pretty easy-going. We like to think things through, so passionate confrontations aren’t commonplace for us. When we get well and properly provoked, though, watch out! We won’t stop talking until every last point that we can think of has been made at least twice. So, what do you say to provoke a geek? Glad you asked!

10. “No real programmer would ever use PHP.” – This won’t work for every geek, of course, but for those it works on, it should work really well.

9. “Comic books are just for kids!” – I’m sure you’ve heard this one before—I know I certainly heard it often enough in high school, and even though it’s even less true now than it was then, I’m sure comic book afficionados still hear it today.

8. “Role-playing games are just for people who can’t deal with real life.” – There are, sadly, still a lot of people who think anyone who plays D&D must live in his parents’ basement and bathe once a month. Such people must be put straight, and immediately!

7. “The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are so realistic!” – I doubt many people actually believe this, but there are an awful lot of misconceptions about pirates out there, so you never know.

6. “Yeah, I got an Xbox 360 so my daughter could play Hello Kitty games. Is it really good for anything else?” – We’ve hit the ones that are hard for me even to type, now…

5. “Mac, Windows, or Linux? Does it really make a difference?” – An argument so old its original form was probably first written down in hieroglyphs, I know, but I don’t know a single geek it wouldn’t work on—myself included.

4. “The Ewoks were the best thing about the original Star Wars trilogy.” / “Greedo shot first!” - I couldn’t decide between the two. If one doesn’t work, I’ll bet the other one would.

3. “Tolkien? Ehhh, I prefer Terry Brooks!” – I almost feel like I should argue with myself just for writing that. I’m going to let the top two stand for themselves.

2. “Joss Whedon is a hack!”

1. “I don’t see what’s so bad about DRM!”

Original article at wired.com.

Hey, don’t think that geeks don’t argue cos they are mostly quiet. When they do, they have lots to say. Especially things like point no. 5, they like to insist that what they like is the best among the best. Geeks reading this: don’t be so stubborn, different people like different things! :D

In the recent American Idol 8, Anoop Desai came in 6th with his geekiness or geek-i-tude as some people call it.

The moment i saw that Anoop was going to Hollywood, I knew I’m going to support him!

A Girl’s Guide to Geek Guys

Writing by white on Sunday, 14 of June , 2009 at 11:05 pm

A pretty good article describing geek guys and what should a girl expect from one.

Why Geek Dudes Rule

They are generally available.
Other women will tend not to steal them.
They can fix things.
Your parents will love them.
They’re smart.

I agree with that! In addition, it’s a thrill to have their attention since they do not bother to communicate much with the rest of the world unless necessary.

Where The Geek Dude Lurks

Of course the best way to meet a geek dude is through the Internet.

Yes, through the internet is where you can get to know your geek well. A geek can express his feelings better via IM (internet messaging) than in RL (real life).

My colleague (a geek) told me his romantic story of how he met his wife. About five years ago, they knew each other via a forum and they started chatting for a few months before he flew across the globe to meet her in person. They got married after another few months. Amazing…

What is a geek?

Writing by white on Sunday, 11 of January , 2009 at 4:48 am

From wikipedia:

“The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as “a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, gaming, etc.”

“The terms nerd, dweeb and dork have similar meanings as geek, but many choose to identify different connotations amongst these terms, although the differences are disputed.”

“A person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Geeks are adept with computers, and use the term hacker in a positive way, though not all are hackers themselves.” – the type i like.
